The balalaika and the balalaika ensemble have become the definitive expression of Russian music throughout the world. Little, however, has been written outside Russia about the instrument. This dissertation attempts to fill this gap by providing a reappraisal of the balalaika. The historical span of the study moves from the balalaika's earliest recorded emergence to the present use of the instrument in contemporary Russia and the USA.
