Rafael Olmedo Violinist and composer born on March 12, 1837 in San Jose Guayabal, department of Cuscatlan El Salvador. He was a student of Escolástico Andrino entering the newly formed school of music in 1847 at the age of 10 years and was regarded as a child prodigy for his extraordinary ability in the violin and later for his compositions. Olmedo composed numerous works for violin and piano but during his life his main work was music for religious services, as was the case with most composers and musicians during the XIX century and the first half of the XX. He died in June 1899. Of his music for solo guitar only 9 composition survive to this day. These, as well as his other secular works, belong to the XIX century romantic tradition in Latin America, with its emphasis in European styles of "light" music known as "salon music". After being published independently at the end of the XIX century, they were later published as a collection in the first years of the XX century.
