The Ciaccona: Bach´s D-Minor Chaconne a dance?
The famous D minor Chaconneis the elaborate, through-composed final movement of a complex work for solo violin, the second Partita BWV 1004. The aim of this paper is to research whether and how Bach´s chaconne is structurally related to the ciaconna-a dance that existed since the early 1600´s in Spain, and probably came from Perú or Mexico. After a brief outline of the development and characteristics of both the Early Guitar Ciaccona before 1640 and the instrumental variation ciaccona in the second half of the 17th century, the author will determine how Bach´s chaconne fits into the development of the popular dance.
