(...It is diffcult, other than through this quote, to bring Agricola’s works into any direct connection with the lute: No lute compositions from him exist and there is no proof that he might have played this instrument, composed especially for it, or included it in performances of his music. The expression clarus vocum manuumque (famous for the voice and hands) from his epitaph is generally interpreted as
Agricola being famous for “his singing and playing of instruments”, that in addition to his profession as a singer, he also mastered instrumental playing.
2 Although this interpretation seems thoroughly plausible, one should however take into consideration the fact that the formulation could be in reference to the disciplines of “Musicus” and “Cantor”, and was chosen in order to emphasize that Agricola united the abilities of the practicing musician as well as those of the learned music theorist and composer3 in one person, without necessarily referring to specifc instrumental skills...)
