This paper discusses Django Reinhardt's place in the history of jazz. His complicated position within jazz history points to its political and geographic dimensions as a music created through its Trans-Atlantic movements rather than the more common New Orleans to New York story. It also points to a connection between the so-called "gypsy jazz" that Reinhardt, together with Stéphane Grappeli, created, and the "newgrass" music of the 1970s and '80s, especially David Grisman's "dawg" music.
