Fernando Sor's Marche Funèbre pour Harpolyre is one of the finest elegies of the guitar literature but completely forgotten due to historical coincidences. Harpolyre was a three-neck guitar invented and patented by Jean François Salomon in 1829, for which Fernando Sor (and other prominent guitar composers of his time) wrote ten works in 1830, and in 1831 Salomon died and with him the harpolyre. So the fate of the instrument was similar to that of the arpeggione with the exception that cellists kept the repertoire alive (well, at least the Arpeggione Sonata by Schubert). Harpolyre's characterics compared to the guitar were lower basses and many possibilities for campanella technique (three necks!), both of which Sor utilizes in the Marche Funèbre.

To transcribe the work for the guitar presents problems that are similar to transcribing J.S.Bach's lute works for guitar. The lack of lower basses is of course unfortunate, but not the reason not to play the work of this caliber. The work belongs to the great tradition of Tombeau compositions dating back to early 17th century and Sor indeed was familiar with this genre. In 1826 Sor lived in Russia and seems to have been in high favour of the Imperial family as he was asked to compose a funeral march for military instruments on the death of Tsar Alexander I. The dedication of Marche Funèbre pour harpolyre, however, suggests a more personal emphasis: “composed at the death of a good wife and dedicated to her husband by his friend, Fernando Sor”. The ending of the work is suspended by the extended coda, and the chilling desperation of the last chords indeed suggest a personal empathy by the composer, who himself had lost his wife some years before.
