René, Robert, Ennemond, Charles and the others; Shadows and lights: The French Lutenists of the first half of the seventeenth century

Between 1600 and 1605 we begin to see in the Parisian archives some ‘maître joueurs de luth’; between 1610 and1640, the era that is also precisely the pinnacle of singing to the lute, the trickle becomes a flood of lutenists. And after 1640–45, there are practically no more. Tis leads us to the somewhat paradoxical fact that during the mature period of Denis Gaultier, and more so during that of Mouton, the lute was already an outdated instrument.
