"Heteroglossia" is term taken from literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, which refers to a blending of world views through language that creates complex unity from a hybrid of utterances. Interpreted in a musical sense, multiple characters or 'voices' can emerge as more powerful than others by being present as well as silent . The coexistence and conflict of these various voices is what gives meaning to this work. The first movement contains a theme as presented by the author; the second presents the theme from the narrator's perspective; the third movement gives the theme to a main character (the performer).
