This dissertation seeks to provide a detailed introduction to the many-faceted musical work of Austrian guitarist and composer Wolfgang Muthspiel, focusing largely on his integration of classical music elements into jazz. Although regarded by many as a world-class contemporary jazz guitarist, Muthspiel has received scant attention in the secondary literature - a deficiency which this dissertation seeks to rectify. Chapter I will review and synthesise the available literature with additional material to provide an up-to-date biographical sketch for Muthspiel. Secondary literature in the German language which has been used in this dissertation has, unless otherwise noted, been translated by the author.
