This intabulation of the French song “Un jeune fillette” can be found in Ernst Schele Tabulaturbuch (Hamburg 1619) with the title "Del Excellentissimo Musico Jano Dulando". It is not unusual to find in private lute books names of composers wrongly written or even music false attributed to the composer. This one is an example of both cases: Jano Dulando is referred to John Dowland and this set of variations of "Une jeune fillette" is very similar to Daniel Bacheler´s variations found in Lord of Chebury´s Lute Book. The style, specially the diminutions, is much more close to Bacheler than to Dowland. I would say it is an attempt from the scribe to copy Bacheler´s variations. The song itself has an interesting history: it is believed that its origin is Italian under the title "Madre, non mi far monaca" (Mother, don´t make me a nun) and lately also known as "La Monica" (derivative from "monaca"). But the song traveled through Europe and everywhere it went, the name and text were changed: in France was known as "Une jeune fillette", in Germany it came to be part of the Lutheran liturgy under the title "von Gott will ich nicht lassen", in the Nederland’s as "Almand nonette", in England "The Queen´s Almaine" or even "The Kinge of Africa". The French text (Une jeune fillette) tells the lament of a young maiden forced by her family to be a nun. She prays to God to end her life, since now her destiny is to live away from her love, friends and family, seeing her beauty fading while locked in a convent. Maybe the success of this song would be explained by the fact that it was a common practice of the time, specially by poor families, to send the daughters to a convent, when they did not have money for a dowry.
