The Paganini Variations are based on a theme from the first of Paganini’s Centone di Sonate MS112. The variations were originally scored for violin, mandolin, and guitar – the three instruments which Paganini played. The piece was commissioned by the Paganini Guitar Festival, Parma, Italy, and the first performance took place next to Paganini’s tomb on 27th May 2023, with Guilio Plotino – violin, Carlo Aonzo – Mandolin, and Giampaolo Bandini – guitar. This version, for violin and guitar, was a collaboration with violinist Max Baillie, who made the solo violin part considerably more virtuosic. The piece has been recorded by Max Baillie and Francisco Correa on Landscape and Memory (Deux-Elles, 2024) – A triple album of Stephen Goss’s recent orchestral, chamber, and solo pieces, with and without guitar.
