Emilio Pujol - Etude XVII (performed by Konstantin Levin) Emilio Pujol Vilarrubi is a famous Spanish guitarist, teacher and musicologist, one of the best students of the famous guitarist Francisco Tárrega. Pujol paid much attention to pedagogical and scientific research activities. He did a great job of studying and systematizing materials concerning the history of music, the origin of musical instruments, teaching methods and performing arts. As a result of deciphering tablatures (mainly by Spanish authors), Pujol was able to introduce the modern listener to many unknown ancient works. Pujol also showed extraordinary abilities as a composer, having published a number of compositions for guitar. The name of Pujol gained significant popularity among wide circles of guitar music lovers after the publication of his “Rational School of Guitar Playing,” which, without a doubt, is one of the best and most complete textbooks of this kind known to us. In the introduction to his work, Pujol rightly notes that in numerous previously published schools the difficulties of playing the guitar are described in detail, but the main thing is missing - a description of how to overcome them. A distinctive feature of the Pujol School is the generous, detailed presentation of all the “secrets” of modern guitar performance. A special feature of the school is that it is entirely built on original musical material: with the exception of a few plays, all exercises and etudes were composed by the author (taking into account Tarrega’s methodology) specifically for the corresponding sections. Including the necessary technical elements, these etudes and exercises are at the same time distinguished by their musicality, which increases the pedagogical value of the manual and makes the learning process more purposeful and interesting. Etude XVII is a triplet, using the legato technique, is distinguished by its light, graceful and expressive character, and its execution requires flexibility and dexterity of the fingers. As a result of working on an etude, the performer must not only master the technical elements, but also achieve a brilliant sound for the entire work.
