Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke was a polystylist who loved combining Baroque instrumentation with Shostakovich-type sarcasm and parody. Like most of the great Soviet composers, his works were viewed with suspicion by the authorities, with some even being banned. That's why working in the film industry, besides the making a living, became the field where he expressed himself as much as he did in the serious music, and what he left as a film composer became the same high level as his famous Concerto Grosso N1 op119, choral music, viola concerto and other stuff.
