This paper aims to analyze and evaluate the musical elements that define Michael Hedges' guitar performance style and technique, and provide an in-depth analysis of his compositional style. This paper will take elements found in the transcriptions of two of Hedges' compositions and analyze them in terms of compositional influences, development, use of non-traditional performance techniques, altered tunings, and overall style. The transcriptions and recordings of Hedges' compositions "Aerial Boundaries" and "Ritual Dance" will be studied and analyzed to display the breadth and depth of Hedges' compositional style. This paper also traces the influence of Hedges' techniques and music to future generations of guitarists who have adapted his signature playing style and further developed it.
