This song is taken from Tedesco's song cycle: The Divan of Moses-Ibn-Ezra (1055-1135), Op. 207, with soprano Anastasia Malliaras and guitarist Aaron Haas. Tedesco must have found much alike in the 11th century Jewish poet, who fled his home town when Granada was captured by the Almoravids and his Jewish community destroyed. Unlike Tedesco, who fled his home Florence in 1939, Ibn-Ezra never returned home. He had fights with his family members and with his own children, which only contributed more to his dark, painful poetry. In fact, these are some of the darkest pieces Tedesco ever wrote.
