These two works are taken from Book II of Reginald Smith Brindle's Guitarcosmos. Guitarcosmos is three books of progressive pieces in which Brindle explores a range of styles and techniques, from medieval to modern (though always through Brindle's own peculiar idiom).

0:00 Organum 0:49De Angelis

In these two pieces Brindle makes uses medieval music as a basis. Organum is named after the style of medieval vocal writing one or more voices are added to a plainchant. Unlike later polyphony the harmonies often moved in parallel fourths and fifths. Like in Brindle's Organum, the tenor (lower) voice had the chant (the longer notes), while the upper voice(s), especially later on, had a more elaborate melody. De Angelis is Brindle's arrangement of the plainchant. He doesn't add that much, but what he does add gives the chant a beautiful resonance. It is perfect in its simplicity. I adore playing it.
