Robert Schumann composed this piece on December 18, 1838 and presented it to his future wife Clara Wieck as a Christmas present later that month. In his diary he mentions this piece as Nocturne, but when published in 1850 the title was simply: Stücke I (Piece I), Nicht schnell, mit Innigkeit - Not fast, with sensitivity. Francisco Tarrega published his arrangement for guitar in 1907.
