Spanish Guitarists in Early Twentieth-Century Germany: Negotiating Musical Identities in German-Language Guitar Magazines

In the interwar period, Spanish guitarists began to perform frequently in Germany, a country where the guitar was promoted by several organizations and was widely popular. The Spanish artists’ success highlighted the contrast between a newfound German identity of the guitar and its traditional association as an emblem of Spain. German views of Spain and Spanish music became a focal point in the reception of traveling guitar virtuosi, such as Andrés Segovia and Miguel Llobet, when the roles of Germany as self-perceived musical Great Power and Spain, Europe’s closest “Other,” had to be renegotiated.
