Audio recorded and produced by Erich Gobel at West Triad Studios in Venice, California.

Sonatine Bureaucratique is essentially a parody of Muzio Clementi’s (1752-1832) Sonatina Opus 36, No. 1, which was, and still is, one of the most popular student works for the piano. Perhaps Satie was making fun of classical form as well as program music. He was certainly making fun of himself since it was Satie (the “deaf-mute from Lower Brittany”) who provided the Peruvian song that serves as the theme for the last movement. The arrangement presented in Phonology is for two guitars, with Andrew York joining me in the studio for the audio recording. The original version for solo piano is so rich with both active bass and treble lines that I found two guitars to be necessary if the arrangement was to stay true to the composer’s intent.
