Brazilian guitarist Gilson Antunes plays Nocturno (1917) by João Octaviano. This is the oldest music written for guitar in Brazil by a non-guitarist composer. João Octaviano was born in 1892 in Porto Alegre, and died in 1962 in Rio de Janeiro. He studied at the Instituto Normal de Música, in Rio de Janeiro, with Henrique Oswald (piano) and Francisco Braga (composition). In 1917 the composer attended to a recital by Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo, and then composes this Nocturno in July of the same year. Three years later (1920), by occasion of Robledo's second visit to Brazil, Octaviano finally concludes his cycle of 4 pieces for guitar, whose Nocurno is the first one.
